The objecttive of the ‘Language of Shakespeare' is to allow the student to read the plays of Shakespeare with a better grasp of their linguistic contents.

This course is not a course in literature but one of linguistics. We shall take one play of Shakespeare―not a commonly performed one―and analyse it from a linguistic point of view with particular reference to the differences between Early Modern English and the language of the present.

授業計画
1.The reading of one play will take the form of a linguistic commentary and analysis of each act, spending about two classes on one particular act. We shall examine Shakespearean pronunciation and its differences and similarities with modern R.P.and particularly American English. Semantic changes will be studied as well as syntactic devices of the plays of Shakespeare.
