This course will deal with the most important trope in rhetoric,i.c the metaphor. Various theories of the metaphor will be proposed as well as an analysis of the importance of metaphor in thinking.

授業計画
1.The general introduction will discuss the concept of metaphorical as opposed to literal language. The course will begin with the Aristotle's first treatment of metaphor as a sort of elliptical simile. This theory, often called the ‘comparison theory' will be followed by other theories of modern times, such as the ‘emotive theory and the ‘iconic signification theory' and the 'verbal opposition theory. Of special interest will be the view of I.A.Richards with its division of metaphor into vehicle and tenor.
