The objective of this course is to familiarize the student with the diversity and relative nature of linguistic signs.

This course will deal with the field of semiotics or the science of signs. Based on a simplified three-fold division of C.S.Peirce,the general theory of the sign as symbol,icon and index will be explained with examples.

1.Introduction to the theory of semiotics with a presentation of a simplifed version of the ideas of C.S.Peirce under the headings of index, icon and symbol. Saussure's concept of arbitrariness of the sign and its importance in structural linguistics. Psychology and the symbol as seen in the works of Freud and the concept of the Archetype as seen in the works of Jung. The relative nature of the symbol and the semi-univeral nature of the icon. Symbols based on flora and fauna. Religious and political symbols in daily life. The symbolic as expressed in colour. Punning symbols.
