To enable the student to read poetry with an understanding of the linguistic techniques used by the poet.
授業概要
The aim of this course is to introduce the student to poetry from a linguistic point of view. Poetry will be contrasted with prose on the basis of phonological, syntactic and semantic criteria.

1.General introduction: poetic diction as opposed to prose. 2.Pure stress metres. 3.Stress-syllablic metres. 4.Pure syllablic metres. 5.Free verse. 6.Kinds of poetry: ballads, folk songs, children's rhymes. 7.The epic poem in various cultures. 8.The lyric poem and its varieties. 9.The sonnet. 10.Phonological elements of poetry: rhyme, alliteration. 11.Phonological elements: alliteration and assonance. 12.Onomatopoeia. 13.Syntactic devices of poetry. 14.Metaphor, simile, personification etc. 15.Revision and questions.
