This course is centered on the close reading and analysis of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey(1818), her first novel. Particular attention will be paid to the novel's function as a parody of Gothic romance. Students are expected to understand the novel in its cultural and historical contexts while relating themselves to the novel as an entertaining parody.
授業概要
We will first discuss some characteristics of Northanger Abbey as "the novel of manners" and then examine how the characteristics contrast with those of the contemporary Gothic romance, in particular, Ann Radcliff's Mysteries of Udolpho. We will attempt to clarify how the romantic and unromantic elements are interwoven in the text of Northanger Abbey .
